The Real Reason You’re Not Earning Enough From Article Marketing

I’ve been earning money from writing articles for many years now, and I get asked all the time how I do it.

Some people seem to think that all they need is to find the ‘secret’ to earning money from marketing with articles and they’ll be rich.

There are a lot of things that people believe about earning money online, but there is no ‘secret’ to online riches, and there is no such thing as ‘overnight success.’

The real ‘secret’ (if that’s what you want to call it) is simply to keep writing. It doesn’t matter what you’re writing the articles for. You just need to keep writing them every day.

They can be for your blog, social media, article directories (like Medium or Wattpad), ebook chapters, freelance submissions, or writing articles for a client. No matter how you earn money from your articles, the most important thing is to keep writing. Even if they’re just practice articles, you’ll find a market for them eventually.

There is no other way.

It’s simple math that someone who writes 2,000 articles a year (5 - 6 articles a day), is going to out-earn someone who only writes a dozen or so articles a year.

And it’s true that writing and publishing a lot of mediocre articles is better than writing and publishing just a few ‘perfect’ articles. The person who earns the most money isn’t necessarily the best writer. They’re the one who outworks the rest.

So if you’re not earring enough money, it’s because you’re not writing enough articles.

Don’t believe me?

Try it.

A Remarkably Simple Yet Overlooked Way To Write Profitable Articles

If you want to earn money writing articles, you can’t do it if you don’t know what to write about. Even if you’ve chosen a niche to work in, you still need to write articles that invoke curiosity and draw your readers in with information that is so entertaining and informational that they can’t stop reading, and are eager to buy or sign up for an offer, or do whatever else you’re asking.

But how do you do this?

It starts with getting into the heads of who you’re writing to.

You need to know what it is they’re looking for. What do they want to hear? What do they want to know?

How are you going to help them if you don’t know what they want?

Find out what drives them, what problems they have, and what keeps them up at night.

Make sure you’re working in a tight niche so you can write more directly to our audience, and see that your niche is profitable. Then learn all you can about your prospects so that you can give them the information they want.

Once you know what they want, it’s easy to write about it, and keep your articles full of the information they’re looking for, while keeping them entertained and inspired.

And all this can be found in my information-packed ebook, Build a Lucrative Niche Website - In A Month.

How To Make a Quick “Killing” With Online Content

I’ve created and run several content websites and blogs over the last 20 years and they were all great ways to earn passive income.

But I gradually reduced the number of sites so that I could concentrate more on writing books. I still have three content sites, and I’m currently contemplating two more and I’ve already started mapping out the content for them.

The reason I can’t give up content sites completely is because over the years the income from these sites has been quite considerable and in their own quiet way, these sites have enabled me to make a passive “killing” in revenue.

The way that I earn money from these sites (and this is just one example, there’s so much more you can do) is to earn income from at least one product that I’m selling, plus earn money from PPC advertising at the same time.

I write content (articles) to attract my target audience, and use keywords to get listed in search engine results so that the right people can find my sites.

Once they arrive, I try and keep them on the site as long as possible, so I put links in the  content to internal pages to keep them reading.

I place PPC ads on every page to increase revenue including sponsored ads and image ads to create more interest which leads to more clicks.

The content I write is also aimed at increasing curiosity about a book or other product I’m promoting. I don’t hard teach, I just tease in the hope that my readers will click on the link to find out more.

And if you’re curious to find out how to have your own profitable content sites, using simple things like PPC advertising, I talk about this in much more detail and show you exactly how to do it in my ebook, Build a Lucrative Niche Website - In a Month

I even make it really easy by not just telling you what you need to do but providing direct links to everything you need.

Do Your Headlines have benefit?

Persuasive writing is necessary when you’re writing a non-fiction book or an article. What you say on paper (screen) needs to move the reader to action. You must persuade them to take the next step.

The same can also be said in fiction. Your story needs to persuade the reader to turn the next page and keep on reading.

No matter what you’ve written, if a reader loses interest, they’ll stop reading and you won’t make any sales now or in the future. This is one of the reasons I personally believe that every writer should study copy writing; the art of salesmanship in print.

To write persuasively, one of the most important things is your headline which needs to draw the reader in immediately. It has to make them curious enough to want to read more.

And you do this by providing a benefit in your headline.

A good headline doesn’t need to contain any fancy tricks, it just needs to pique the reader’s curiosity, which could be as simple as a question that they feel they must get an answer to.

Just look at the headline of this article. It was a question. And it piqued your interest enough to make you want to know the answer.

To create an effective headline that benefits the reader, you need to know what that benefit is. And you need to make your headline intriguing.

For instance instead of using the headline “How to Write More” you could use “How to Make an Extra $1,000 from Your Writing This Week.”

Which headline would get your attention more?

Saying “write more” sounds like hard work. No one wants to work more than they already do. And saying “more” isn’t clear enough. How much more? 10 more words? 10 more pages?

But we all want to earn more money from what we do, and an extra $1K in a week is fast and desirable.

Here’s another example:

“How to Satisfy a Woman in Bed”

Verses

“What Women Really Enjoy in Bed”

Again, the first example sounds like hard work. It makes it seem as though you will have to work harder to if you want to satisfy a woman in bed.

But the second headline uses the words “really enjoy” which sounds much more pleasurable to both people in the bed.

What a Headline Does

A headline has just one job. It has to get the reader to read the first paragraph. After that, it’s up to each sentence/paragraph to keep carrying the reader deeper into the article/sales page/book.

This is why a headline needs to promise a benefit of reading more. It needs to intrigue the reader.

But don’t make the mistake of thinking it needs to appeal to everyone. It doesn’t. It only needs to appeal to those who are interested in reading what you’re offering.

So if you’re only appealing to writers, as in the previous example, you wouldn’t write “How Make an Extra $1,000 This Week.” The headline must appeal only to writers, otherwise, anyone else who reads it, who isn’t a writer, will be disappointed. That’s why the headlines says “an Extra $1,000 From Your Writing…”. It lets the potential readers know that it is addressing writers.

And there are any number of questions you can pose in a headline to elicit interest.

How about:

“Do You Make These Mistakes When You’re Writing?”

This headline will be effective because writers will want to know what these mistakes are because no one wants to get things wrong.

Make Your Headline Do Its Job

So when you write your next article or sales letter, make sure that your headline is doing the one job that it is supposed to do.

It must draw the reader in to start reading the first paragraph by providing a promised (or implied) benefit to the reader.

And then you need to make sure that each sentence/paragraph after that, keeps drawing the reader in further.

But - and this is important - whatever benefit is implied or promised in the headline, make sure you address it. Don’t pose a question in your headline and then never answer it.

And make it clear what the answer is. Don’t surround the answer in unnecessary ‘waffle.’

People read your articles and sales pages looking for solutions and benefits. So make sure you provide them.

And it all starts with your headline. Know what benefit the reader is searching for and you’ve found the great headline.

Choosing a Money-Making Niche

Article Marketing Money Making Niche
Photo by Life Of Pix from Pexels
Article marketing is a way that millions of people have been earning money online for decades. And the reason it's so popular is because it works. And from my own observations, all the successful article marketers have 3 things in common.

1. They love what they do. Their online article marketing is more like an obsession than a job. Their enthusiasm shines through everything they write. To them, working is fun which is probably why they do it all the time. They don't fit their work into their life, they fit their life around their work.

2. The niches they choose are all money-making, followed by readers who are avid buyers too. The subjects they write about are evergreen and always topical, including self-help, diet, health, insurance, debt, and home ownership, just to name a few. These are topics that people are always interested in.

3. They never run out of ideas. They are so hard-working that their minds are always 'on the job' so they're always working on the next great idea, or a new way to monetise their online content.

So how about you?

Do you love what you do? Are you pumped with enthusiasm every day to write the next batch of great money-making articles?

Do you work in a niche that's always topical and followed by avid readers and buyers? And if not, can you tie your niche into a more popular one? If you want to know what's popular, take a look at the top selling non-fiction books on Amazon. These are the subjects that people are not only interested in, but they're already spending money to find out more.

And most of all, doesn't your niche provide you with unending ideas for content and ways to monetise it?

If not, I've got a book that can help...

How To Write Money-Making Articles

Image courtesy of Mohamed Hassan, Pixabay.

It’s one thing to want to earn money through article marketing, but it’s another to know how to do it.

My advice, from my own personal experience, is that all your articles need to be written for the purpose of earning money. But you can’t write sales pitches. You need to write compelling articles. And what they need to do is compile the reader spend money on a product or service, without them feeling as though you’re trying to sell to them.

So how can you do that?

To write successful (and by that I mean money-making) articles for your blog or website, they need, amongst other things, to include the following 3 ingredients:

  1. Entertainment.  Your article needs to tell a story that entertains the reader. They must be entertained or they won’t keep reading. Stories have been used throughout history to pass on information. Even Jesus taught this way.
  2. Curiosity. We always want to know how to do things. That’s why we like magicians because we always want to know how they do their tricks. Likewise, your readers need to be curious to know something. But your article must not tell them how. Only that they need to know.
  3. What to do next. At the end of your article, tell the reader what to do next. You want them to click the link at the end of your article and make a purchase. But you tell them that they’ll ‘learn more’ or ‘find out’ by clicking the link. Or you discreetly place the link without saying anything hoping that they’ll click it as the next logical thing to do.

Readers first and foremost must be entertained by what they read. No one wants dry, boring text. What you write must make them curious to know more. Pose questions that they might be thinking about, but don’t answer them. Your article is for marketing, not teaching. So tell them what they need to know but not how to do it.

End the article by telling them what to do next which is usually clicking a link or signing up for something. If you don’t tell them what to do next, or at least hint at it with a link, it will feel as though your article finished at a dead end.

And while we’re on the subject of what to do next, click the link below and download a copy of ‘Fast & Profitable Article Writing’ and discover how many ways you can write and profit from online articles.

Did You Know There Are So Many Ways To Earn Money Writing Articles?

A few weeks ago my new ebook was published. Fast & Profitable Article Writing.

In this ebook, I take you through many different ways to earn money writing articles. And I don't mean writing articles for clients, which is what most people think about when it comes to earning money from article writing. What I talk about in my new ebook is writing articles, publishing them online and earning money from them all.

Naturally, the first thing that you might think about when it comes to publishing articles online, is blogging. There are many great blogs out there that earn their owners a full-time income.  Blogging is a great way to earn passive income. You can choose your own niche and upload as many articles as you want and earn money through affiliate marketing or from the advertising on your blog.

Niche websites are similar to blogs. A niche website could have a blog attached to it as well. These are websites where you earn money in the same way as a blog. I've had both types of sites and they've all been successful. I've never had one that I didn't earn money from.

I've been a writer for many years now and one thing that I discovered early is that I like to work on multiple projects at once, like blog posts, freelance articles and writing books, ebooks and short reports. And even if you want to write articles, you can still work on several different projects. You can also write articles in different niches and upload them to many different websites.

For instance, did you know that there are websites where you can post articles and sell them? There are also sites where you can upload articles and get paid when people read them. And there are writers who earn good money this way. Some earn up to $70,000 a year. One of those websites lets you upload as many articles as you want and sell them for a minimum of $7 each. Most articles on that site sell for much more.

Working this way leaves you free to write articles on any subject you want and in any niche, without having clients dictating what you must write and how they want it done.

But no matter how you choose to earn money from writing articles, the most important thing is to write many articles. Don't treat it as a part-time hobby. Even if you have a full-time job, make plenty of time for your article writing too.

When it comes to success in anything, commitment and consistency are the two most important things.

And when you're writing articles consistently, with practice comes speed so that you'll soon be writing faster AND better.

And then you can keep writing and uploading your articles until you're earning enough money to become a full-time writer.

Don’t Stress Over Sales - Just Productivity

There’s a problem that working writers always face, and that is, how to earn money writing.

It’s one thing to decide that you want to earn money writing articles or as a freelance writer or even a novelist, but it’s difficult, if not impossible, to know how much money you’ll earn.

The truth is that you cannot control your income from your writing (unless you’re a columnist and get paid regularly) but you can control your productivity.

I’ve been working as a writer for over 20 years now so I know that I need to earn money from my writing, but I cannot control that. But I can control what I do.

If you’re in the same position and you want to earn money from your writing, or you’re just beginning, here’s what I suggest (from my own experience):

Have a plan of what you’re going to do and then work your plan. I know that sounds overly simple, but it’s the only thing you can do and it’s what you MUST do.

Start by picking the best time to write. It doesn’t have to be the same time every day, but you need to decide which hours on which days will be your writing time. If you don’t set time aside to write you won’t do it. Alternatively, decide how long you’ll write every day (say, one or two hours) and then fit it into your day no matter what, and no matter how late that means you may have to work.

Next, you need to decide what you want to write and how you’re going to earn money from it. It can be more than one thing. I began as a freelance writer and at the same time I set up my own website, published articles on it, and earned money through PPC advertising on the site. One was paid income (freelancing), the other was passive income. And together they earned me enough money so that I could quit my job.

Finally, you need to work hard. And by hard I mean you need to be productive. Not busy. It’s too easy to get caught up in things that don’t matter like reading emails or checking social media or over-researching. Make sure that you’re actually writing, submitting and publishing.

So choose your time to write, know the tasks you need to do, and be your most productive self.

And most importantly, be consistent in everything you do. Don’t be productive once. Do it always.

Success comes from hard work.  And productive people are always successful

How to Apply The 80/20 Rule to Make More Money Online

When you’re running an online business, or any business for that matter, you naturally want to make as much money as you can.

But time is not limitless, there’s only so much you can do in a day. So how can you make more money without working longer?

The answer is simple.

Look at what you’ve already got and use that.

Now this may sound obvious and at the same time confusing, so I’ll explain.

Say you have a website (or 2 or 3) and each of them is making money.

That may be great, but what if you want to earn more money from the website/s you already have instead of creating more?

That’s where the 80/20 rule comes in.

You need to look at all the things you’re doing to earn money every day. Your time might be taken up with

  • Article marketing
  • Product creation
  • Guest posting
  • Blog comments
  • Affiliate marketing
  • And more…

From all these things, which gives you the best return for your efforts? In other words, what’s producing the most sales?

For instance, you might be spending 4 hours/week writing and submitting marketing articles and 1 hour/week posting blog comments on other people’s blogs.

And when you look at your website stats and your sales stats, you might see that when you post blog comments it brings far more visitors to your site and creates a flood of sales, while your marketing articles produce only a fifth of those results.

This is the 80/20 rule.

You’re spending 80% of your time (4 hours out of 5) writing articles to produce 20% of the results (one-fifth of the sales).

Whereas with your blog commenting, you’re spending only 20% of your time (1 hour out of 5) to produce 5-times the results (80%) of your marketing articles.

So you can see just from this quick example that you need to either:

Post more comments and write fewer articles

or

Improve the results from your article marketing.

Another way to apply the 80/20 rule is to look at the page view stats for your website, see which pages get the most page views and perhaps think about writing more articles like that.

Also, look at the products that sell best and get more like them.

You can also change the prices of your products by lowering or increasing them to see if it makes a difference or bundle your products or add bonuses so that you can make better offers to your customers.

Remember that many customers who buy online, only do so if they think the value of what they’re buying far exceeds the price they’re paying.

Changing what you sell or how you sell it can impact sales and make you do less work (20%) for more sales (80%)

Apply the 80/20 rule in every area of your website and every area of how you work.

Do more of what’s working and stop doing/improving what isn’t.

Finding The Time and a Place to Write

woman writing

One of the biggest problems that some writers face is finding time to write.

If this is a problem that you always face, then this is the best advice I can give you:

You'll never FIND the time to write.

You have to MAKE the time to write.

No one has 'Free Time'. There's no such thing so don't go looking for it.

In order to find free time, there would have to be a part of the day where you're not using your time for other things. In other words, you're looking for a time where you do nothing but sit and stare into space. That's your free time.

Does that sound like a part of your normal day? I don't think so.

If you want to write, you have to make the time to do it. This will mean giving up something that's less important like watching TV or socializing.

This will seem hard at first, but before you know it, writing will be a part of your daily routine just like everything else you do.

And if you already have a full-time job and a family and you feel that you really just don't have the time to complete The 12 Month Writing Challenge, remember this:

It's a challenge. It's not meant to be easy. And if you look at your daily working routine you'll see that you have pockets of time all over the place.

You can write in your lunch hour, on the train, get up earlier to write or burn the midnight oil and go to bed later.

You just need to have the drive, determination and laser-like focus to do it.

And once you start writing and you get to know how long it takes you to complete something, then you can plan better and streamline your whole system of working.

Just remember that if you really want to be a writer, you have to stop making excuses for yourself. You need to work at it and make it work for you.

Have a Place to Write

I have a place where I write. I have a small desk in my library at home. I also have a laptop computer and a printer and a small chest of drawers full of papers and notebooks in my library.

This is where I mostly work. It's a cosy room and feels relaxing.

Sometimes I sit outside and work, either on my back covered patio or on my front porch. Some days I even work in the park or at the local library (it's air-conditioned on a hot day).

But mostly I work at my desk in my library.

I read a lot and I've read much about other writers and how they work. And one common thread of most writers is that they have a place where they write. Most of them have a time when they write too.

Having a place to write works in several different ways -

It puts you in a writing mood.

It's easy to keep equipment at hand.

Others know you're always busy when you’re in your writing place.

There are fewer distractions.

It's easy to organize your writing place so that you're not distracted by the TV or a nice view (don't sit facing a window).

And once you've established a place where you write, other family members will quickly learn that when you’re in your writing place you’re busy and don’t want to be disturbed.

And as you start earning money, other family members might start to take your writing seriously.

How To Work With The Razor-Sharp Focus Of A Zen Monk

Monk Studying

The hardest part of running your own online business is staying focused.

It’s easy sitting down and getting your work done when you have a 9 to 5 job with a boss looking over your shoulder. But it’s a whole other world when you’re working at home on your own with no deadlines and no accountability except to yourself.

Self-discipline is easy to say but can be hard to achieve.

So if you’re having trouble with concentrating and getting your work done, then you need to practice having the razor-sharp focus of a Zen monk.

Can you imagine how great it would be if you could have complete focus on whatever task you were doing and forget about everything else? Just think of how much you could get done and how well you’d do it?

How Do Zen Monks Focus?

Zen monks (and all monks) focus by only ever concentrating on one thing at a time.

If they’re gardening, they’re only focused on the plant in their hand. If they’re walking they are focused on each step as they take it. They never think ahead as to how the garden will look or what they’ll do when they reach their destination. Instead they concentrate on whatever they’re doing in each moment.

How Can You Focus Like a Zen Monk?

Working this way requires forward planning. If you want to achieve the same kind of focus, then you need to plan ahead so that you know what you have to do and when to do it.

You also need to break things down into tasks, not projects.

For instance, creating a website is a project. Finding a hosting company, building a web page, writing content, are all tasks that make up the project.

Planning ahead frees up your mind by removing all the clutter. Clutter is the worrying you do over other tasks you still have to do.

Zen monks not only have clutter-free minds, they also have clutter-free lives. They own very few possessions which frees them up so that they can spend more time on what’s important to them instead of cleaning and maintaining possessions they don’t need.

You can also rid your own life of unnecessary clutter. Sell or donate what you don’t need and you can have more room for living.

Don’t let distractions clutter your attention either. When you’re working, ignore the phone if it rings and don’t check your email all the time. If your phone alerts you to emails and messages all the time, turn it to silent and put it in a drawer in another room.

Keep Your Focus Longer

If you find that your focus starts to wane, take a five-minute break. It can be helpful to work in short bursts of 30 to 40 minutes and then have a 5-minute break to go and make a cup of coffee or pat the dog. Just do something unrelated to your work.

Breathe More

When you work hunched over a desk for too long you may find that your breathing becomes shallow.

Zen monks believe in the stress-reducing and focus-inducing power of slow deep breathing.

If you find you’re hunching over your work, sit up with your spine straight and take a few slow deep breathes and it will clear your mind and help you to focus more.

And stay away from excuses - I’m too tired, I’m too stressed, I have writers’ block. These aren’t reasons for not working. They’re only excuses.

Whenever you feel yourself procrastinating, say “No Excuse!” and get back to work.

Take A Leaf

The late, great copywriter, Eugene Schwartz, worked like a zen monk and he earned millions of dollars from his writing.

So take a leaf out of his book (figuratively speaking, not literally) and make sure that when you’re working, you’re working in a ‘zen’ state.

Start simple and don’t overwhelm yourself.

All you need to run a successful online business is a computer, an internet connection and the ability to focus like a zen monk.

And if you’re reading this then you already have the first two.

So now...how’s your focus?

The Power of Concentration

By Theron Q Dumont

To make the greatest success of anything you must be able to concentrate your entire thought upon the idea you are working on.

The person that is able to concentrate utilizes all constructive thoughts and shuts out all destructive ones.

The greatest man would accomplish nothing if he lacked concentration.
